07:39 pm - Adventures in Retail Had to share a little story with y'all.
I've had lots of interesting and/or dumb encounters working at the liquor store... and haven't shared many of 'em.
Gotta share this little gem though. Today, I went next door to the main warehouse to pick up an item or two. I'm standing in line at the registers, talking with a co-worker who walked over with me. We're just chatting and observing the crowd (glad we don't work in the main store!) when I overhear a conversation at the line next to us.
There, a father about my age is standing there with his little girl. She's likely 5 or so. He's just placed an item on the belt, when his daughter asks "What's that Daddy?"
"That's for Mom", Dad responds.
"Oh. How come Mom gets stuff?" the girl asks petulantly.
"Because Mom gets whatever she wants" answers Dad.
"Well that isn't fair!" responds the youngster.
"No. It isn't." says Dad. With just the right hint of bitterness that any adult would detect, but would be lost on a 5 year old.

08:25 pm - Ways to call in sick... I was just reading an article on Fark.com, on techniques for calling in sick. Actual tips, for those who can't figure out things like showing up with a tan the next day is bad.
Anyway, that started a discussion thread on ways to call in sick...
Here's a post that cracked me up...
Tell your boss you have explosive diarrhea.
While on the phone, drop a water balloon full of something almost liquid, like jello, on a tile floor, making sure the sound can be heard on the phone. Needs to be loud, needs to be heavy, and it needs to sound like a lot of it.
Say "whoops."
Boss will inform you that you are not to come to work under any circumstances for the next week.
Okay, it's poop humour, but damn if that didn't make me laugh. :D

06:31 pm - Where d'ya want these bags??? Hey all!
We're doin' a huge spring/summer purge around the ol' homestead this week, and you wouldn't believe what a pack-rat I am.
After several trips to the dump, mavmaw and I cleaning closets, de-cluttering the basement (with the fantastic assistance of madeileen...thanks again luv!), we've tossed an unbelievable amount of....stuff.
Which brings me to the main point of this post.
I've (re)discovered that we have a small plethora of luggage. No, not the emotional kind (well... that too), but the kind ya use for goin' places.
So, does anyone need some luggage? Here's what we have:
Duffel bag, medium-sized black leather ... brand new ... so new it still has packaging on it.. - Kez
Duffel bag, small black leather - Tremaine
Small wheeler suitcase, black with extension handle - Phil
Medium wheeler suitcase, black with extension handle (NOT a matched set with the above wheeler) - Phil
Suit carrier, black (I think it's American Tourister) - Lisa/Iain
Suit carrier, black w/ brushed steel Calgary Flames logo/plate - Anyone a Flames nut? - Lisa/Iain
Soft valise/briefcase with Calgary Flames and St John Flames logos - from 1995 Training Camp
Soft valise/briefcase with Calgary Flames logo and "Calgary Flames" text - Iain
Small (not large as previously thought) soft suitcase, burgundy (Samsonite) - Joel
That's it. I can provide pics of the stuff if anyone is interested. It's all free to a good home, and is all in good-or-better condition. (We actually have more bags, but they're getting tossed... too worn or beat up.)
Lemme know if you want a piece or two! Otherwise, it's gettin' donated somewhere... Current Mood: busy

03:50 pm - A "Special" Addendum
Howdy again all...
I forgot one amusing little occurrence from the camping trip I blogged about yesterday...
We were sitting by the fire on Tuesday evening, just enjoying the quiet and solitude, when there was a splintering CRACK, the sound of many branches breaking and creaking, and we whipped around to see a tree fall over. Madeileen cautiously looked over, to see if something.... large-n-alive had pushed the tree, or if it went on it's own. Turns out it just.... went. Creeped us right out though!
So, the age-old question has been answered.
Yes, if trees fall in the forest, they do indeed make noise. Lots of it. ;) Current Mood: tired

12:03 pm - Faux Album Art - Ganked from Shuffledog This was a fun little excersize...
1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first article title on the page is the name of your band.
2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.
3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4.Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post the result as a comment in this post (optional).
Here's my first attempt... done fast and dirty... didn't like the image I randomly got...but I ran with it. Yeah, there is a lens-flare in it... but it worked with the laser (which was in the original pic)
Say hello to NAVAL REACTOR!!!! :)

10:58 pm - Voice stuff & a new convert Howdy all!
Voice-Land has been interesting of late!
I've been keeping a little busy. I've done a few e-Learning projects with one of Calgary's top voice-guys. He asked me to help out with some of his projects. How cool is that?
I've also done a few radio ads of late. A few for DeVry, and most recently some fun character ads for Baywest Home Builders. Most notably, I've been asked to take part in an on-going project for e-Learning with another studio in town...and if the project takes off, I could be doing a couple of sessions per WEEK, on an on-going basis. Huge earning potential, IF it works. (I'm one of 6 performers that have been asked to be part of this, 3 male and 3 female). Crossing my fingers!!!
I've also been looking into getting representation in other cities, and have been talking with a few people in the business about that.
As a result of those talks, and other factors, I've *FINALLY* started to outfit a home recording setup. I picked up a studio microphone, a couple other goo-gags necessary for home recording (an "MBox Mini" for one thing)
MOST notably, I now have a very sexy iMac.
That's right. I've finally gone over to the other side. I'm a proud Mac owner. I promise not to start wearing black turtlenecks and smokin' clove cigarettes. ;) I just picked the beast up today, and was quite impressed with how easy it is to setup, and to learn the basics. Taking a bit to get used to a NON-windows machine though. Plus it's gonna take me MUCH longer to learn the audio software I'm using. (Pro-Tools)
I'm so jazzed about all of this, I just had to share. :D
Now, someone tell me what the Mac secret-handshake is. ;) Current Mood: artistic

09:56 pm - What a fabulous day!
My adventures into the great outdoors continue. First it was hiking, then cross-country skiing.
This time, madeileen and I decided that a day at the ski hill was in order. Downhill skiing this time. She wanted to break in her new snowboard, and I...well... I wanted to see if I could still ski, and if I still enjoyed it. I used to be an avid skier when I was younger. Loved it, and laboured to become a semi-decent skier. I haven't gone sking for 6 or 7 years now.
So, the adventure begins! I got up at 6:15 am and groaned. Whose idea was it to get up this early? Oh yeah... mine. :) I puttered about the house as quietly as I could, so as not to wake mavmaw. Finally, I couldn't stand waiting around anymore, (and didn't want to wake MA) so I hit the road about 20 minutes ahead of schedule. It was strange leaving the city while it was still dark out.
I enjoyed the solitude of the drive out to Kananaskis. Had my iPod blaring away over the car stereo, and just generally loved the drive. Traffic was fairly light.. considering it was a weekday and still really early, I shouldn't have been surprised.
I got to highway 40 about 15 minutes ahead of my planned time. I quickly texted Ronya, and said "running early...hope you're up!" (She was working the day before...)
Finally, I got to Ronya's workplace. The place was abuzz with morning activity and shift-change. Lotsa folks about...more than I'd seen before. I chatted with a couple of 'em... seems like a good group out there.
Ronya asked "need a coffee?" I think I nodded. She got me a big-arse cup and pointed to the coffee machine. As I filled my cup, she said "don't take too much... it's FIREHOUSE coffee". I thought, well, couldn't be much worse than the stuff we make at my store. It wasn't. Much worse. Just a little. LOL. Sure perked me up though!
Anyway, we headed over to the Kanaskis Village for a quick bite (and better coffee) before the ski-hill opened. Enjoyed some morning conversation and a terrific (HUGE) bagel.
Then, off to Nakiska! I got my rental gear, Ronya got us passes, and we were on the chairlift. She admitted to being a little nervous.. first time on a hill other than C.O.P. I admitted to being a little nervous myself, as it had been so long since my last day on the slopes.
Long story longer... we had a great day, and got more confident as it went on. I do remember how to ski, and I *still* love it. DANGER! I'm a little more cautious than I used to be, but then I'm not a young adult who thinks he's immortal anymore. LOL.
Anyway, we did six runs in total, which amounted to a good half-day of shushing down the hill, before our bodies started yelling. My thighs were locking up, and Ronya's knee was getting tender. I need to get in better shape!
We turned in my rental gear, and got ourselves gingerly loaded into the car. We then headed down to the Village again, where Ronya has access to the spa and gym facilities at the hotel. (Rough life!) We then soothed our aching muscles in the hotels hot tub, which was simply glorious. Soaked for probably a good hour while yapping and laughing.
Then, time to head home. Ronya drove me back to my car, and we hit the highway in our respective vehicles. I left a little later than she did, as I organized my stuff, but caught up to her part way through the drive. "Holly zippy!" she texted me. I innocently replied "who me?" Yeah... texting while driving. bad.... I know. She's corrupting me. :)
I got home, and gave Mary-Ann a big hug 'n kiss, as she'd had a lovely (not) day at work. We yapped for a while, and we then prepared to go to a scotch-tasting a friend of ours was doing at his liquor store. I laid on the bed and let my muscles groan while MA got ready to go, and told me the events of her day.
We headed to the tasting (over in Edgemont) and had a wonderful time. I even found some scotch that *I* like. I daresay I could convert a few people to scotch with a wee dram of these lovely beverages. One product rep was (surprisingly) offering samples of a 25 year old highland scotch. (Over $200 per bottle) It was GORGEOUS. I think some folks thought he was a blashphemer though, as he was serving it with a little dab of french vanilla ice cream on the side. (All other reps had crackers, pate, savoury things like that.) I know, ice cream... sounds gross, to both scotch and non-scotch fans! It was AMAZING!
Anyway, I took it easy on the scotch after the day on skis, thinking that I was over-tired and REALLY vulnerable to alcohol. Glad I behaved. I could have gotten liquored REALLY quickly.
We drove home after the event (making sure one of us was good to drive), curled up on the couch and caught up with a couple of shows on the PVR. (God, I love Mike Rowe's "Dirty Jobs") We headed to bed just before 10. At which point I pretty much slept the sleep of the dead.
Thanks for a wonderful day Ronya! Thanks for a wonderful evening Mary-Ann! I'm a lucky fella. Life is good. :)
Now I wanna go sking more!!!!!
...as soon as my thighs stop aching. :D Current Mood: cheerful

09:08 pm - Anyone else encounter this? Mavmaw and I just got a somewhat freaky phone call.
It's nearly nine at night, and our phone rang. The call display said 'OUT OF AREA'. We answered, and a heavily Indian-accented voice said "Good *afternoon* ma'am. I'm calling from Arki *somthing* in Calgary".
MA said "Hi.... but it's not afternoon here." (I smirked.)
"Oh, I'm sorry ma'am. Good evening. I'm calling from Arki *somthingorother*. Can you tell me if anyone in your home suffers from (badly prounounced) asthma?"
"No."
"Can you tell me if anyone has allergies?"
"No."
"Can you tell me if anyone in the family has pets?" (we're kinda weirded out at this point...as the guy just felt more aggressive than your average survey taker...)
"No"
"Do you have a family doctor at this time?"
"Yes"
"Do you visit them on a regular basis?"
"Sorry, I'm not telling you that."
"Oh. Well, you needn't worry ma'am. We aren't going to ask you any personal information at all, and we aren't attempting to sell anything. Do you visit your doctor on a regular basis?"
"I'm not comfortable telling you that...sorry"
"Oh. What is your name ma'am?"
"I'm not telling you that."
"Ma'am, we aren't interested in your full name. Just your first name. Our company isn't collecting any personal information at all. May I ask your name?"
"No."
At this point, the guy started getting MORE aggressive.
"Ma'am, the company I represent in Calgary (mis-pronounced as "cal-Garry") isn't collecting personal information. You don't even have to give your real name. We simply want to present you with the opportunity that our..."
I reached over and pressed the hang-up button.
Now, I'm simplfying what the guy was saying, as he really tried to pry MA's name out of her...and I stood by the phone listening for an additional 30 seconds, prior to hanging up... the guy got freakily aggressive...and I have no idea what the hell he was after. He *claimed* to be from a Calgary company... which I *think* was something like Arki Homes... but.... not sure.
As I got very suspicious, I activiated Telus' Call Trace function, in case they called back. The Telus system reported that the call could not be traced, as it wasn't within the traceable area.
Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.
Do I need to keep an eye on my phone bill or something? That was just..... uber-strange... anyone had a similar experience? Current Mood: irritated

08:33 pm - The death of HD-DVD Found an interesting article today, through a link from The Digital Bits.
This article scared the crap outta me. While I knew that Microsoft was in bed with the now-dead HD-DVD format, I didn't realize how MUCH they were in the sack with Toshiba. Had HD-DVD won the high-def format war, suddenly all the studios and movie-lovers out there would have (perhaps unwittingly) been permanently tied in to Microsoft's proprietary codecs. Codecs they TRIED to push on the Blu-Ray disc association, but the companies that make up the BDA decided to go with a Sun java-based system instead of being tied to Microsoft.
Here's a bit of commentary from The Digital Bits on this mess:
" Anyway, the Roughly Drafted story is an absolutely recommended read, even though I expect there will be some folks out there that simply won't believe it. We certainly can't (and don't) vouch for everything in the piece, as our area of expertise primarily lies in the film and home video realms - not the computer or gaming industries. But I can say that in terms of what was going on behind-the-scenes in this format war, the author's perspective definitely jives with what we ourselves have seen and experienced.
For better or worse, we believe Microsoft used this format war to push its own agenda, and it's been home theater and film enthusiasts - both early adopters and those waiting on the sidelines for this whole big confusing mess to end - that have suffered the consequences. We believe that without Microsoft's influence (as evidenced in this Business Week story from 2005), Toshiba and Sony would likely have been able to work out their differences in this format war, under pressure from Hollywood and retailers, just as they did back during the development of standard DVD (when Sony and Philips abandoned their own MultiMedia Compact Disc format to get behind Toshiba's SuperDensity Disc, which became the basis for DVD). Had that happened, there wouldn't have been a format war at all. Which means that this format war DIDN'T have to happen."
Wow. I said before that I didn't care WHICH format won the idiotic and unnecessary format war, but suddenly, I'm glad that Blu-Ray won the battle.</font>

02:06 pm - Feelin' Nostalgic I ran into an old friend last night.
I hadn't seen him in ages. Back in the 80's, we hung out a lot. He seemed to be EVERYwhere.
Alas, while it's good to see him again, time hasn't been kind to him. In addition to not aging well, he's become bitter. It's a shame to see him this way.
Nevertheless, we spent the evening catching up. He's had a pretty rough life since the 80's, but I'm glad to see he's still around.
I'm sure many of you remember him....
M-m-m-Max Headroom!
Or... Max Sr., as I like to call him. As you can see, time hasn't treated him well. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
I found out that Channel 4, over in England, decided to resurrect their old star/creation, to help educate viewers about the coming of all-digital TV. (...and thusly, the death of analog)
Once I viewed the first of the new ads... ("did I ever tell you about the 80's?" - love it) ... that lead me to surfing around the 'net and watching some ol' Max Headroom classics. Watched some great bits from Channel 4 (where the character was first created as a VJ...yes, Max was a Brit creation) and then found a couple of old "New Coke" ads (including one from Australia that I'd never seen). I finished my Mmmmax trip with an interview with David Letterman. Well, that's not ENTIRELY true. I watched the Letterman interview, and then finished out with the video of Art of Noise's "Paranomia".
Man... what flashbacks Max caused. L-L-L-L-love it! Catch the wave, cokeologists! ;)

11:08 pm - BANG BANG!
Some time last year, madeileen and catalytic gave us a gift-certificate for The Shooting Edge, a local gun range. We kept it handy for ages, and thought we'd better use it before it expired.
So, we discussed going with the aforementioned gift-givers, and we all ventured down there this fine wintry evening.
When you go down to the range, you get to select from their various demo weapons to fire. Pay a range fee, plus the cost of ammo, and go have some fun.
We selected a Glock 9mm, a Sig Sauer P226 (9mm Luger, I think), and a .44 Magnum (Smith & Wesson model 29). *eep*
The Range Officer was great, and went over safety rules and operation of the pistols. We'd all shot before, except for mavmaw. This was her first time, and she was pretty nervous. He was really a pro with MA.
We went into the range proper, and proceeded to load up.
Catalytic took up the .44 first, and fired off a round while the rest of us were loading our clips.
The BOOM that erupted from his hand-cannon could be felt in your bones. Mavmaw and madeileen jumped a foot. I had to check my pants to make certain I didn't allow a little pee to escape. Holy crap, the POWER of the thing.
I fired the Glock first, and it was fun. While I was doing that, MA picked up the .44. She was totally terrified, but she gave it a shot. It bucked in her hands as she fired of one round. Then she moved back to the semi-autos. Can't say I blame her! Pretty damn scary weapon, especially for a first-time shooter.
Once I was done with the Glock, I moved on to the .44. I was SERIOUSLY intimidated by the monstrous revolver. I loaded the chamber, and flicked it closed. I raised the pistol up, took aim at the target, held my breath and gently pulled the trigger.
That's when the overly-caffeinated horse kicked me in the wrist. Lucifer's hoary fistula...that thing had so much kick, it was TOTALLY astounding.
After firing off 6 shots (did I fire 5? or 6? ...do you feel lucky?) I moved on to the Sig Sauer, which had been my pick. Loved it. Of the weapons we selected, I found it the most enjoyable, and most satisfying to fire. I had to resist the urge to quickly empty a clip BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG.
We all took turns with the .44, and I think I did 18 rounds with the beast. My wrist is still sore from the horse kicking the crap outta me.
All in all, it was an expensive half-hour (I think the .44 rounds were rather pricey), but it was just a blast! Have to do it again.
Followed up the bang-bang-fun with dinner and a movie...and then a slightly freaky drive home in the unexpected snowfall.
Great night. Plus, I gotta say that seeing the women fire the pistols was strangely hot. :D
Thanks guys! :D Current Mood: bouncy
